Cedarburg water hardness: about 21 to 24 grains, unsoftened

Cedarburg Light and Water does not leave the hardness question to anyone else. Its own website gives the range in grains per gallon and says the public supply is not softened. Here is what that range describes, how it rates, and which homes it leaves out.

Deep wells, high in minerals

City water comes from deep groundwater wells, and the utility itself calls it high in minerals. Hardness measures two of those minerals, calcium and magnesium, dissolved in the water.

The utility puts that hardness at approximately 21 to 24 grains per gallon, and it states plainly that it does not soften the public supply.

Already in grains

Grains per gallon is what a softener's setting is expressed in, so a figure published in grains needs no arithmetic for a house on city water.

If you meet hardness in milligrams per liter elsewhere, such as on a well report, dividing by 17.1 converts it to grains and lets it sit beside the city's range.

How 21 to 24 grains rates

Measured in milligrams per liter, the USGS calls water soft at 60 or below and very hard beyond 180, with moderately hard and hard in between. That very-hard line equals 10.5 grains.

Every number in Cedarburg's published range lands in the highest band, with the low end at double the line.

Who the range does not describe

It speaks for Cedarburg Light and Water's system only. A house in the Town of Cedarburg, or around Hamilton, that draws from its own well has no published figure; a test of that well is the only way to know its hardness.

It also does not describe any single faucet on a given day, which is why the plumber reads yours before any work begins.

From the utility's range to your quote

For a house on city water, the range is already on our desk before you call, so the conversation turns to who lives in the house and where its main line comes in. We size from that and quote a single figure.

When install day comes, the softener is set from the plumber's reading at your tap, and the retest after the work has to show zero hardness.

Common questions

Where does the utility publish its hardness?

On Cedarburg Light and Water's own website, on a page about the hardness of Cedarburg's water. The range and the not-softened statement are both there.

Is the low end or the high end of the range right for my house?

The page alone cannot say. The reading the plumber takes at your tap on install day is your house's own number, and the softener's setting follows it.
